What a surprise to discover a 40 cm deep secret space on the first floor of Herengracht 401 behind the coving of the fireplace. And even more surprising was the copper spiral we found. Streching from top to bottom it was connected through two wires with what was from the outside two seemingly dead electric plugs. There is but one logical conclusion: this must have been either a secret transmitter, or a secret sender or both. Who has lived on this floor during the war? Was there a connection with Gisèle, Wolfgang and the friends in hiding on the 3rd and 4th floor? It seems to be a track worth following… Who knows more about this? Any suggestion is welcome!

This is indeed fascinating. The first floor neighbor during the war was Mr. Altsema (Claus Bock’s memoir briefly mentions him). I don’t know of any knowledge or suspicion on the part of the group around Wolfgang and Gisele that he was involved in any resistance activity. On the other hand, anybody who WAS involved with a secret transmitter would have been unlikely to tell anyone else.
